What is the ACT?
The ACT is a digital or paper-based, two-hour standardized test that assesses a student’s readiness for college. Accepted by most U.S. colleges and universities, it evaluates critical reading, writing, math, and science skills, providing a benchmark for admissions decisions.
The ACT at a Glance
The ACT consists of four multiple-choice sections including an optional Science section, and an optional Writing (essay). Scores for the four sections combine into a composite (1–36); the Writing score is separate.

English - 75 questions, 45 minutes

What’s tested: Passage-based editing for grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, style, and organization (Usage/Mechanics + Rhetorical Skills).

We focus on: quick rules, idiom traps, concision, transitions, and passage strategy.

Math - 60 questions, 60 minutes

What’s tested: Pre-Algebra, Algebra I/II, Functions, Geometry (plane/coordinate), Trigonometry, probability & data

We focus on: formula-free approaches, timing ladders, and must-know problem type

Calculator: Allowed for the entire Math section (approved models only).

Reading - 40 questions, 35 minutes

What’s tested: Comprehension and reasoning across four passages: Literary Narrative, Social Studies, Humanities, Natural Science.

We focus on: main idea vs. detail, inference, author’s purpose, and efficient passage timing.
4. Optional Science - 40 questions, 35 minutes

What’s tested: Interpreting charts/graphs, experiment summaries, and conflicting viewpoints—minimal outside science knowledge required.

We focus on: data translation, experiment logic, and question ordering for speed.
4. Optional Writing (Essay) - 1 prompt, 40 minutes

What’s tested: Analyze perspectives on a contemporary issue and present a well-reasoned argument.

We focus on: fast outline templates, evidence selection, and clear paragraph structure.

ACT Scoring

Composite Score Range: 1-36 points (average of English, Math, Reading, Science; rounded to a whole number)

Sections Scored Separately: English, Math, Reading, Science — each 1–36.

Optional Writing (Essay): scored 2–12, reported separately (does not change the composite).

Breakdowns Provided: Reporting Category results show % correct by skill area (great for targeting strengths/needs).
Plus STEM (avg of Math & Science, 1–36) and ELA (avg of English, Reading, and Writing if taken, 1–36).

No Penalty for Wrong Answers: Only correct responses count — guess on every question.

Score Availability: Most multiple-choice scores post in ~2–3 weeks (sometimes up to 6–8 weeks).
If you take Writing, that score typically appears ~2 weeks after multiple-choice.
